Today had looked like the only break in the weather after the recent high winds from the early part of the week and thankfully stayed that way.
We launched at a lazy 9:30am to be in position for the first of the ebb tide. Our intended mark was surprisingly already occupied so after a scout around we came across a lovely looking bit of ground begging to be fished! The water had a lovely bit of colour to it from the last few days of 55 knot gusting winds and bad weather. It looked 'fishy' and boosted our confidence.
With the hook in at high tide slack we didn't have long until the boat swung into position for the ebb. First cast on my uptide rod and I was in to a decent fish.....felt coddy - and it was! First one of the day @ 9lb and a great start! For a nice change we weren't getting pestered by pout, dogfish or eels today and although the bites were fewer in between they were all from good fish. The next fish came on my downtide rod and this one did feel like a good'un in the full run of the tide. She was eased up bit by bit until she surfaced just behind the back of the boat like a dolphin and swam off to the side! It was at this point that we could both see it was a big fish with a broad set of shoulders sat behind a huge head. My legs turned to jelly as I guided the cod up the side of the boat and up in front of the waiting net. She went in without at hitch and certainly put a smile on my face! Best one this year and my third biggest cod at 22lb.
Dave was next to find a cod, another one of the smaller ones in the 6lb bracket.....
I then proceeded to miss 3 cracking bites on the uptide rod over the remainder of the trip. The hooks were clear and sharp, the fish just dropped the bait each time....couldn't understand how I'd missed them and very frustrating! Dave on the other hand was having better luck connecting with his and managed another two fish. Firstly a small bass between 2 - 3lb......
........and then a cod that turned into a very nice bass as it came in to view! As I scooped her up in the net she looked very chunky and had potential to go a double. On the scales she went 9lb 4oz and is Dave's second biggest bass I believe, needless to say - he was happy!
Shortly after we lost the tide and were pulling up the anchor at 15:45pm. What a cracking afternoon though with some quality fish. The wind looks set to come back in strong now as far as I can see on the forecast......could be post Christmas by the time we get out again, you never know.
