With an absolute cracker of a forecast and a big tide, the choice to look for a few more plaice today was an easy one. After driving through to Sandown for a 6:30 launch in thick fog we were soon away on a silky smooth sea shrouded in low cloud. Two pairs of eyes scanning the horizon (all of 100 yards away) for pot buoys and other vessels through the thick patchy mist as we followed the course on the plotter!
Eventually we arrived at the mark, the sun had come out to play and the fog was lifting with every minute that ticked by. A flat calm sea with a good deal of clarity brought with it the promise of a good day.
The anchor went down and before long we were pulling in small plaice from 8oz to 1lb with the odd dab thrown in for good measure.
It also seemed that we weren't going to avoid those little scorpions either!
As the tide eased we had a look for a few fish on the drift and it took a bit of searching to locate them in any numbers. We found them in the end though and had a flurry of fish over the next 30 minutes. Nothing big and most were skinny and out of condition but great fun all the same. Two at a time......!
With the big tide the drifting window was short and we were soon on our way back to the club around lunch time. I think the final tally was 20 plaice....nothing bigger than 2lb with 18 of those fish returned to get bigger and feed up. Jake was gutted he didn't come today but was consoled by the promise of the first few bream turning up in the next 2-3 weeks!
Fingers crossed for some of this fine weather on next weeks small tides....
