We were anchored up to fish the last half of the flood tide and settled in just before darkness. We were just admiring the sunset when I noticed some interest on my down tide rod. The deliberate slow heavy nods signalled the first ray so I fed it a little line to take the bait confidently. Happy the fish had hold, I set the hooks and fought it back to the boat against the large tide that was pushing through. Eventually a modest male undulate came to the boat - just in time for a sunset back drop. Just in to doubles this one at 10lb 8oz - Well endowed too!.
The evening continued on with a few dogs and the occasional pout but on the whole was fairly slow. Just as the tide started to ease up a notch though, Dave found another undulate...bit better this one - a female around 15lb produced the smiles.
To give ourselves enough beach for the retrieve we had to be on our way by 10.15pm and as we approached lines up time, Dave bent into another ray.....this looked like a blonde and I think he was thankful that the tide had now died right back! Sure enough after a bit of coaxing, a nice male came in to view.....just a few ounces short of 20lb.
Now it was fast approaching 10:30pm and it really was time to get moving. By the time we had got the hook up and steamed in there was just enough beach left to get the boat back on the trailer.
Got to be a go at the bream next....there were a couple caught today, patchy but they are here at last.
