With the superb forecast today, Dave and I headed out for another crack at the plaice armed with some freshly dug worms and half a dozen peeler crabs. The crabs can sometimes pick out the better fish here and are well worth taking along if you have some.
On arrival we were greeted by an Armada of around 70 boats!! To give ourselves a bit of room, we opted on a mark a bit further out that has produced well in the past.
Soon the gear was deployed and within minutes Dave had a nice little knock with turned into a mini dab! Another for the species count.
This one is now swimming happily in my native marine aquarium!
We kept it in a white bucket through the day, changing the water frequently – was weird to see that the dab change from total brown to a lighter cream colour with a good show of white spots – I guess trying to camouflage to the background!
Next up and I was off with a nice plaice around 1 3/4lb.
It was around this time that we realised we were missing the frying pan and had no way of cooking our burgers so it was a quick call to Dale, who was anchored nearby with a frying pan of his own!
I managed another plaice before we reeled the gear in and motored across to borrow the pan! – cheers Dale!
Gear back in again and it was time for a few burgers and no sooner had the burgers started cooking when Dave noticed a few gentle taps on one of his rods….lifting into the fish it felt a bit heavier than anything else we'd had. When I saw it I wasn’t sure whether to net or harpoon it !......a big plaice with a huge profile !!
On the scales, she went 4lb 14oz and was a new PB for Dave, beating his previous best by 2oz!
I think this fish would have been closer to 6lb in top condition....it was very lean and skinny from spawning.......and yes, crab was the bait!
Next fish up was another plaice for me, which Dave then followed with one at the complete opposite end of the size range!
At last knockings, another three between us….(the sun-burn was starting to kick in now....should have worn a cap Dave!)
A quality day out and a few worms left...........think I might do the same again tomorrow :-) !!
