Surprise Stinger

Today I planned on a trip out in search of gilthead bream again, fishing a mark I had done quite well on last year.
We fished hard through the best state of tide and could only find small black bream, school bass and a few wrasse. The gilts didn't appear to be in residence and despite our best efforts, we couldn't find one. The surprise of the trip though came from an all together different bite...a slow continuous nodding confirmed my suspicions as I lifted into the weight. Bear in mind, this was on a very light spinning rod and after the initial slow plodding the ray woke up and screamed off, tearing line off the little fixed spool! I looked at Dave and he looked back at me....we both new it could only be a sting ray and as I managed to get some line back he got ready with the net. As it came in to view, I was quite surprised to see it was a fairly small one. It fought deceptively above it's weight which I think was dramatised by the shallow water and light rod. Still, a rare fish in my book and not one I have caught for a good few years either!

Sting avoided and photos taken, we carefully slipped her back to find us again when she has put on 20 or 30lb.....now that would be fun on a spinning rod!
