Shore Cod Hunt

Cod are few and far between from the shore around the Isle of Wight but with reports of the odd one showing here and there it had to be worth a try.
It was windy and bloody cold but being the determined idiots that we are, Dave and I gave it a good go! After chucking the baits out and settling down a little mouse seized its chance and started tucking into Dave's bait only inches away!....funny little thing, it wasn't the slightest bit bothered about us and just carried on as if we weren't there.
Any way, a few small bites from the ever obliging pout soon gave way to the kind of bite that makes you spill your coffee, resulting in this perfect little 3lb codling to a whole squid.....nice!

Suddenly there seemed to be warmth back in our bodies and with renewed enthusiasm we fished on. Dave then gets a nice bite and thinking "cod on" disappoints himself with an energetic specimen sized pout .......a nice pout (if there is such a thing!) at 1lb 12oz!

To add insult to injury, he then lost a decent fish in the surf (probable bass) after which it went a bit quiet from there on really, with just the odd pout knock. Still, a night out though and a rare Island shore caught codling to show for it!
