The weather really has been crap recently but a small window had Dave and I venturing out in Rockhopper last weekend to new and unknown territory for the first cod trip of the season .
We arrived at the mark around 5pm and deployed the cuttle fish and squid baits. A slowish start with a few pout bites to begin with until my downtider gave a better bite and a nodding fight..could it be?...yes it was! First one of the year!
As the tide slowed the fishing went mad, this saw 3 cod on at once - a cod on each and another thumping away on my uptider!
Soon we had 3 cod in the boat and things were getting hectic. Missed bites, tangles, more lost cod, and the camera had decided to stop working.
Another 3 cod then came to the boat, best two going 14lb 3oz and 13lb 12oz. The cod were not the only ones picking the baits up...we had to deal with half a dozen congers hitting them too! The fishing continued like this until slack water & last knockings when Dave pulled up a 17lb 2oz beauty!! 7 cod and is was only 7:30!
We decided to call it a night after this as the boat was a scene of carnage and the wind was starting to get up...we had lost the tide too at this point.
What a great way to start the season.....lets just hope the weather plays ball and we can get back out on them.
As the trusty camera gave up, we had to make do with a few photos at the compound on return! Dead fish never take the best photo, but hey - here they are all the same.
