Southern Star Species Bonanza!

Yesterday, Dave and I had a trip aboard Greg Woodford’s Southern Star. Weather couldn’t have been better with a calm mirror sea and a nice blue sky. We were even treated to a dolphin swimming along side us as we motored out past Yarmouth Pier. It wasn't long before we rounded the Needles heading for a distant wreck.

The main aim of the day was for wreck bream…..but as always almost anything can turn up….including sharks!!
Best moment of the day was a visit from a large Porbeagle. One of the guys on board was tope fishing with 130lb mono and a mackerel flapper when he had a nice run…..5 minutes into the fight it was clear that this wasn’t a tope, as the fish kept on taking line and travelling downtide. 15 minutes later and he was down to his mono backing so Greg decided to buoy the anchor and reverse after it (as just maybe it was lip hooked!)
We got within 50-100yrds of the fish and could sea the fish doing a Jaws impression on the surface with its dorsal out of the water….within seconds of that the fish erupted into a frenzy of white water and bit through the trace line!!

We did see the (or another) large shark follow up a tope of Dave's after this….and Greg deployed a bait under a balloon for the rest of the trip…but no joy!
Still an excellent day’s fishing with plenty of action and an excellent fishing story to tell to the grandkids!!
Throughout the day there were plenty of bream landed to just above 4lb, with a dozen or so Tope to 30lb, Red Gurnard, Poor Cod, Smoothound, Dogs, Pout, Mackerel, Scad, Garfish, Cod and Conger!

Only managed a few pics as the fishing was pretty hectic!!
