Well, what a fantastic weekend of weather we have just had - normally I would have taken full advantage of it, but as I had the role of 'Groom' at an awesome wedding on the 18th I thought that might be taking the piss just a little!
This evening though, was perfectly acceptable and come 7pm, we were launching the boat!
As I stood by in the surf with the boat waiting for Dave to put the tractor away I noticed some surface activity no less than 30 yards out. I quickly tied on a sidewinder and cast right into it as soon as Dave made it back to the boat. This resulted in a small bass as did each subsequent cast along with the odd mackerel. We needed bait so Dave put on some feathers and pulled in a few more mackerel...never seen them that close in here before!
We had a bit of bait and were increasingly aware that the flood tide had already started to pick up. Not wanting to waste any more time, we shot off to start fishing and catch the first of the flood.
Daylight brought with it a few small blonde rays and a sub 2lb bass before the darkness drew in and the action kicked off. Tonight the bass were playing hard ball...gentle bites, picking up baits - then dropping them, little plucks and pulls.....a real game of cat and mouse.
After several slow missed runs and strikes into thin air, I finally nailed one by scaling down the size of the bait.
They were really finicky tonight and we just kept missing them but Dave soon managed to connect with the next couple of fish...
More frustration followed before the last fish of the evening was hooked.....this one, the best of the bunch nudging 5lb.
The short spell of action was soon over and it went very quiet before we called it a night. You can't help but feel like you should have handled it differently missing so many fish but that's the way they are sometimes!
The pots returned a nice Lobster and a lovely crab (much to Jake's delight).....destined for a hot bath!
Weekend doesn't look so promising on the weather front but there's a little window Thursday.....let's hope it stays there!
