First Cod Of The Season

With fairly settled weather and a small tide, the first trip of October had to be a shot at a cod.
After a mid-morning launch we were punching our way out in a fairly heavy swell deliberating on where the conditions would dictate we fish. We knew where we wanted to be and after some thought decided to stick with the original plan. Should the weather pick up as forecast, we could always move inshore later on.
With the hook in, out went big squid and cuttle baits...nice to be doing something a bit different for a change and you gotta love fishing for cod!
Dogfish proved to be a menace throughout the day but fishing through them we managed to find a few better fish...well Dave did anyway!
Amazingly, the first 'fighting' fish came in the form of the target species! A small one around 6-7lb but a cod none the less....good start.

As always, there is always a few bass willing to take big cod baits and although not the target species they're welcome all the same....usually it's the bigger ones that you tend to pick up this way too.
The next three fish were indeed bass, a small fish for me and a couple around 4lb for Dave.

As well as the dogs we had quite a few small strap congers, a couple of smoothounds and a thornback ray. Listening to the radio, there were a few cod starting to show for other boats but despite our best efforts we couldn't find another one today.
The last fish, that came right at the end of the session looked to have cod written all over it. When it surfaced though, we could see why. It turned out to be a nice bass hooked up under the chin and coming in upside down. This one was bigger than the only cod we'd had at just over 8lb!

I just hope it doesn't take me as long as it did last year to pull out my first one of the season!
