Hard Work

Glorious weather, shit fishing - just about sums up our day today!
We were out for best part of the day in an area that had fished very well for some recently. The trouble is, those cod have tails and they don't stay put for too long!
We initially thought we were in for a treat of a day when both of us hooked up into suspect cod within 5 minutes of dropping anchor....imagine our reaction at the realization we were both attached to the same conger when it hit the surface...FFS!
Well that paved the way for the rest of the day.
At one point, I thought I was attached to a very big cod. Rod doubled in the full run of the tide, definitely not an eel this one. It must have taken 15 to 20 minutes to get our first sight of it and my arms were burning!
it wasn't a cod..it was a 'small' thornback ray that had the pennel hook in it's mouth and the main hook in it's ass!.....I had quite literally been flying a kite for 20 minutes.

We found a couple of whiting and the odd dog but on the whole it was very quiet.

We made a mad decision to head out for the last half an hour and fish the first little trickle of the flood out deep before we had to get back in. It sort of paid off, as I dropped a small cod as soon as we arrived and boated another shortly after...

Just about salvaged the day but even if the fishing wasn't up to scratch, the weather was perfect!
I think Dave is out Tuesday night on one I can't make....what's the bet they find a few!
