Lady luck was with us today and Dave took more than his fair share of it....luck that is! Yes, we had a young lady on board today who was, and I quote "hungry for a cod"!
The forecast couldn't have been better, and for first timer - Laura, the weather gods kept their promise. Flat calm seas and glorious sunshine.....what more could you ask for?......A few cod, tea, coffee and bacon rolls from the new galley wench for a start!!!
There were a few competitions on today as well as the Bembridge open and it showed with the amount of people afloat. We just about managed to get in to where we wanted to fish and soon the rods were rattling away with lots of small bites.
Dave was first to connect with a better fish and whilst playing it had another going on his other rod. They came to the net one after the other and gave Laura a glimpse of a cod in the flesh.
Laura broke her duck and was off the starting blocks with her first ever fish - a dog!....but then soon after something with a bit more fight. She had said she wanted to catch a conger so what better way to start than with this little chap!
Slack tide soon came and the larger whiting came out to play for a bit......largest one went to Laura at around 2lb.
Dave managed to drop another cod on the way up and I might as well of just sat there with my thumb up my arse! I missed several good bites and runs with fish dropping the baits until I hooked into what I was sure was a small cod. I passed the rod to Laura and stood by with the net while she pumped it up to the surface. Low and behold another small eel. Following that she went about making the most mouthwatering bacon sarnies going .....in addition to a nice mug of coffee!!
The ebb tide was soon underway and with it, came another cod.....on the wrong side of the boat again!!
The little fish continued to tear up the baits and I continued to drop and miss good bites. The next fish confirmed a serious case of whoop-ass had taken place today.
If it wasn't for the great company, weather and bacon rolls I think I would have tripped over my lip!!
One over 25lb will make up for everything next time...please!!!
