First holiday in a while with the family this year, with the Greek Island of Zante the destination. Now, if you're anything like me you would have packed a telescopic rod and a small box of lures/hooks etc...- well, it would be rude not to!
After lunch, courtesy of the all inclusive restaurant, I had sneaked out some slices of bread and a few mussels in a couple of napkins and took a wander along the beach only feet away from the hotel.
Apart from some finger sized mullet scooting around, the place was pretty barren with the beach being mostly flat and sandy. At the far end of the beach though there looked to be a small shallow harbour with a few small boats tied up in it so off I went to investigate.
At first this looked to be pretty empty too but throwing in bits of bread revealed the small mullet and a few small darker fish on the bottom. I managed to temp a big goby out from his hiding place with a whole mussel before he shot back in out of sight - at least there was something to have a go at!
The next evening I was back with a rod and Jake in tow. I had a bit of bread and we had collected some mini hermit crabs from the rocks around the harbour walls - I picked this trick up in Skiathos and knew that the small brightly coloured hermits would be the killers!
The mullet proved very tricky to hook on the relatively large hooks that I had and after 30 minutes of losing bread, we cracked open a few hermits. The float was immediately pulled down with a tiny fish and up came this colourful little devil.
Lots of tiny little rock fish were pecking at the bait and this caught the attention of the first of the Giant Gobies!
Shortly after Jake came running up with news that he had spotted the mother of all gobies and he wanted to catch it........and that is exactly what he did!!...a monster by Goby standards!
We had little visits to the same place most days and clocked up plenty of Gobies, a few small mullet and some very colourful mini wrasse type fish. Certainly nothing that set the world on fire but fishing doesn't have to be all out for specimens all of the time - you can have a bit of fun with it too and it's all too easy to loose the enjoyment if you take things to seriously!
I think everyone manged to have a go at some point!
The 7 days flew by in no time at all and before we knew it we sat back on the plane home.....now we just need some of that weather down here!
