What the hell has been going on with this weather?!!! Hurricanes and constant high winds throughout the rest of October, knowing the cod are there has left me climbing the walls at home! I was beginning to wonder if we would ever get out for another go at the cod this year but thankfully today there was a break in the weather.
Like kids on Christmas Eve we couldn't wait to get out there and get our baits in the water. We headed for a mark that served us well last year and got stuck straight in with the fishing.
There were plenty of fish on the ground, mainly dogs and pout but it wasn't long before the first suspect cod hit the bait. This one turned out to be a small eel around 10lb that was quickly unhooked at the side of the boat. More dogs and a thornback followed before one of my rods almost got pulled out the back of the boat, this fish had to be a small cod....you can just tell!
With one under the belt you tend to relax and enjoy the session a lot more and it wasn't long before I had the second one aboard....this one a bit better at 11lb.
We had a couple of undulates, another eel and plenty of large pout before Dave and I simultaneously hooked suspect cod. Unfortunately Dave's fish shook the hook and mine revealed itself as a low double smoothound.
The tide died away not long after and that was that - evening done. With the weather the way it's been we need to make the most of every opportunity that presents itself to get back out there and nail those cod!
