What Does The Cod Say.....

......Oink Oink Oink Blub Blub would be my guess but I've never heard one say anything yet!
With the weather still being kind (sort of) we had to get out for another shot this evening to make the most of it while we still could. The wind was still pretty breezy but was forecast to ease back as the evening went on and true to form it did.
With it being the weekend we got to fish for a couple of hours in the daylight for a change and judging by the colour of the water I don't think the cod would of known either way! There were reports of some good fish that had been caught during the morning and early afternoon for boats that managed to locate them. With a chance of cod pretty much anywhere this time of year one spot can provide just as much potential as another but it's hard not to follow the crowd when you know where the fish have been caught.
We steered away from the crowd and logic by fishing inshore on a small tide this evening on an old favourite mark very close to where Olly had been sat for the first part of the day. Speaking to Olly he let slip that he had found 4 cod there through the day so that made up our minds and we were set for the first run of the ebb.
Not too many small fish here and any interest we did get was from better fish. First one up was a small eel around 15lb that was a 50/50 on the cod or eel call. The next one though had cod all over it and after a good scrap in the tide run it came up deep just underneath the boat. This one was just into the teens and a welcomed start.

Whilst we were playing around with the camera my uptider began to nod away with something that clearly wasn't happy on the end. I swapped the cod for the rod and wound down into another decent fish. Initially we both though this was number two but it started to behave a bit more like a ray as it came up off the bottom. No surprise then when an undulate surfaced 5 minutes later.....a good fish this one at over 16lb.

Darkness came quickly and it wasn't long before I had another fish on. This one was lively and had to be another cod or an autumn bass. Halfway up though the unseen fish threw the hook and the rod sprang back up with all life at the other end gone....no matter how well or not the trip is going it always hurts when that happens!
Dave hit into something lively too, this one didn't get away and made it to the net without incident. A nice bass at just shy of 6lb.

We had a couple more eels before the second cod of the evening was on. This one felt bigger and had a bit more weight to it so I took it gently! Arriving at the side of the boat it looked a better one too....this one just over 17lb.

With two half decent cod on the deck I had to get a pic of the 30lb+ brace ;-)

Not long after that second fish things really slowed up and when the last of the ebb tide failed to produce anything else we called it a night. Can't wait to get back out there and nail a few more!
