Over my entire angling career I've only ever caught one ling before now................. whilst hopping shads Mid Channel for Cod!(not unheard of though) If you want to set your stool out for one.....a good one, the only way to do it is to target the beasts on a dedicated trip.
This is where Rob Thompson steps in, a very knowledgeable skipper operating from Lymington (will happily pick up from the Isle of Wight at Yarmouth) who will go out of his way to find you the fish. (See link in side bar)
After chatting with Rob back in the early summer it was clear that we could target these species on certain wrecks in the channel, so a trip was organised around suitable tides in July.....Anyway the day arrived and the weather was peachy - bright blue sky with hardly a breath of wind, and after a long long steam later, we had arrived.....
We spent the day with a mixture of drifting and fishing at anchor with the drifting seeming to get the most fish....
Everyone on the boat managed a ling or two, I had a couple to 15 1/2lb which beat my previous personal best of 11lb and Dave had one of 13lb 2oz.
There were also bullhuss caught and a fair few eels with the biggest brute taken by Lee topping out at 80lb.
A tiring but great day out....nice to nail the target species and top marks to Rob for finding the fish!
