Lucky....

We ventured out again last night in search of some more cod….
With the massive tide are usual haunts were out of the question so we anchored a new mark inshore. It looked good on the sounder and as the first of the baits went out things started very slowly with hardly a touch.
As our confidence was starting to disappear my uptider registered a 'coddy' looking bite which in fact turned out to be a nice painted ray of 8lb 2oz.

A bit of faith and confidence restored and Soon after my down tide rod was away....... a classic nodding cod fight all the way up and safely in the net. This one went 6lb 8oz and seems to be the main stamp of size for the cod this year.

With the first cod aboard confidence levels were good and this was re-enforced by a nice bite on Dave's uptider. Another nodder which turned into a cod of 7lb 5oz.

In-between the cod there were a few lively eels taking the baits and the usual large pout.
As the tide gathered pace I had a nice bite and struck into the fish which felt like another small eel. This was pumped up with the usual disapproval until once on the surface it turned into a bass! Soon netted, this one went 5lb 8oz.

Minutes later Dave's downtider shot off and this was definitely a head shaking bass….lots of fast runs with the fish swimming at speed towards him then powering off. On the surface it looked a better one. The tide at this point was stonking through so I lowered the net behind the fish in readiness. The bass then gave an almighty head shake and spat the hook...Dave screamed something unrepeatable and then looked in disbelief…as I lifted the net with the bass just inside the rim!!......now that was lucky....very lucky! A really fat fish which went 7lb 12oz and was a new personal best for Dave. I wouldn't have heard the end of it if that fish had got away....saved me sitting next to Mr Grumpy all night too!

Not to be out done I was soon playing a decent bass....this one was all over the place too but thankfully made the net without incident. This one was the twin of Dave's fish at 7lb 10oz.

As the flood tide died, so did the action and we were on the beach by the small hours of the morning.
We always try and name new marks with something to remember the first trip on, so this one is called LUCKY!
