A Fat Double

Dave and I popped out for a short cheeky shore session yesterday evening - the target being Solent Bass and Smoothound. A short session with some huge ragworm and crab, fished at the prime state of tide.
Weed did prove to be a bit of a nuisance during the evening but not enough to hinder the fishing. Between us we managed half a dozen bass to 3lb, most of the fish were around the 2lb mark and slamming the rod tips round each time. Highlight of the night came from a similar bite that proceeded to strip a good 20 yards from the reel after setting the hook. It didn't have the head shake of a good bass but had plenty of weight behind the slow plodding around that followed the initial run. Easing the fish in bit by bit, it kept it's head down and I was beginning to wonder if in fact I had found myself a stingray. Our lights were on the water as the leader knot came up through the rod rings, eventually picking out a fat female hound that looked heavily in pup. Slightly disappointed (I would have loved a big stinger) but still happy, I gently cradled her for a photo and a quick weigh in a sling before slipping her back. A nice low double at just under 11lb.

Shortly after that the 'fishy window' had passed, the weed came through in it's masses so we knocked it on the head. A great short session none the less and I'm sure we will back down for another go at some point!
