Determined to get myself a Gilthead Bream or two this weekend, some careful planning had me out in the boat this evening with Dan for company. Dave couldn't make the trip but we had plans for the morning - basically, I had been instructed to find them so we could hit them again in the morning....no pressure then!
After doing a bit of ground work I had a fair idea of where I might be able to find them, but it's always a bit unknown when trying new areas after new species. I've caught the odd one or two in the past but more by default than design. Today was a mission purely aimed at catching a gilthead, not something I have set my stool out for in the past.
Game plan - sharp hooks, light rods, shallow water, worm & crab, specific ground........fish ard!
A ten minute blast to the mark and we were fishing. It looked prefect and in no time at all the rods were rattling. Rattles from the wrong variety and small ones at that, with 6oz black bream nailing the baits within seconds of touch down.
Twenty minutes in and I get an altogether different bite....a couple of sharp clonks followed by a slamming pull round on the light gear. The fight felt more 'bassy' than bream like and I was beginning to wonder! What a boost of confidence when our target species came to the boat....at 8oz it was a small one but it fought well above it's weight!
Fishing was now becoming hectic with hoards of the black variety...any more than two rods on the go was a headache. Fishing through them, we found another gilthead, a better one to Dan at around 1lb.
An 'any good call' from Dave had him getting twitchy as he was missing out on the fishing but excited at the mornings prospects....we had found the fish and knew how to catch them! As always happens, when you are on the phone your rod has a tendency to slam over with a bite and true to form I had to hang up! Another good fish this time which came in the shape of a lovely tub gurnard.
Ten minutes later I had another gilthead similar in size to Dan's and shortly after we called it a night.....now looking forward to the mornings episode and looking at the forecast , it should be perfect!!
