Bassin' On The Bottom!

No lures today - just good old fashioned bait fishing, with our sights set on finding the better Bass. Now obviously there is the small issue of getting hold of bait. This time of year it's mackerel and to give yourself the best chance - it wants to be fresh! The mackerel down here just haven't appeared this summer and heading out expecting to catch some for bait would be foolish - buying frozen mackerel this time of year is ridiculous and a first for me but it had to be done.
That is unless you can predict the future - for the first time this year we found some......not just one or two but loads! Lovely small joey mackerel - perfect bass snacks....Sod's law but I wasn't complaining!
In 15 minutes we had more than enough to fish with and now I really felt confident we would find a few bass!
We'd timed it perfectly and were in place for the first run of the flood tide. My Son Jake had sneaked aboard today for a bit of the action and had his sights set on a decent Bass.....shows he growing up as before now he was more interested in catching mackerel!
Chunks of prime fresh mackerel went out and as the tide gathered pace the first of the bass tried to rip my rod out of the boat.....a nice fish this one at 7lb 4 oz!

Dave followed suit with a fish just minutes after of 5lb 8oz....

Jake's turn came next when his whole Joey mackerel was snatched! He was on it instantly and played the fish expertly to the boat all on his own with just a few words of encouragement on my part. Now this was one fish that I really didn't want to come off and thankfully it didn't....safely in the net - I don't know who was more excited / relieved, me - or him!
A quick weigh on the scales before some photos gave Jake his personal best Bass of  6lb 4oz......smile says it all really!

We were getting smashed left, right and centre over a 40 minute period and we missed as many fish as we hooked. I had another one around 3lb and Dave - one of 5lb 12oz...

Then, just like a light - it switched off. We fished on for another hour with just one lone smaller fish coming to the boat before we called it an afternoon.
What an awesome trip though and great to see a few mackerel.....we even had a few left over for the freezer!
