The Nights Are Drawing In....

Now the days are getting shorter with each one that passes by, the window of darkness and opportunity widens before we are into the next. Unless the water is coloured, darkness nearly always out fishes daylight when your on the bottom looking for bass.
We had a couple of hours in daylight to find some bait and make a start though...luckily today, the mackerel were sort of playing ball.
I found a small bass around 2lb and a spotted ray in the very last trickle of the ebb before we swung into position on the flood. More mackerel and a few scad found their way to the boat before the tide got going and we settled in.
My uptide rod was the first to start gently nodding and pulling round....after picking up the slack it was very evident I was into a blonde. I don't think we would have seen this fish had the tide been running at full bore....it was hard going in what we had and put up a bloody good scrap. I was expecting to see something a little bigger than the 16lb fish that came to the net!!

As darkness fell, the bass came out to play. Certainly not hectic fishing but they were about and you had to have your wits about you. Dave had the first one of the night with a fine looking fish that really gave him the run around in the tide, using the flow to it's full advantage. I stood by, net in hand with Dave knitting his rod through the others as the bass made for the the other side of the boat. Amazingly, void of tangles she played ball and came to the net......another fish that fought well above it's weight at 5lb.

I proceeded to get bitten off by a succession of nuisance congers before finding the next fish....this one around 4lb.

There were definitely a few big eels playing with the baits and skulking around down there and at one point Dave very nearly lost his rod over the side to one!
Dave brought one more bass to the boat around 3lb before the bites dried up and it was time to shoot back in.
A bit of day time fishing planned next, maybe a mid-weeker looking for a plaice or two - well with 4lb of worm in the fridge you've got to......haven't you?  ;-)
