I had invited Andy from work along for a trip today which meant an early start....a 5am alarm didn't sound very nice when I had only just got my head down 3 hours earlier from last nights sortie! Still if it's fishing, I always seem to be able to pull myself out of bed and flick the kettle on!
We were off out through some serious fog not long after 6am and thankfully as we made out into the open Solent we managed to leave the fog behind.
First stop off at the forts to find some bait.....bad move - we wasted 20 - 30 minutes for one mackerel and missed the best of the tide at our intended mark. Sods law, as soon as we get there Andy plucks out two full strings in the time it takes me to get the anchor down!
Had the tide of not been so small I think we would have done alright but it didn't happen. Hassled by small bream, with the only consolation being plenty of mackerel.
We had a move for the start of the flood and again it was very slow going. The tide was just a trickle, the sea was as flat as your hat and the sun beating down - it didn't scream fish!
Andy struck into a small bite that suddenly woke up and gave him the right run around on his spinning rod to only drop the bait feet below the surface. We never saw it but my money was on an undulate!
We were just contemplating a move when a big squid bait I had uptide got nailed by a suspect hound. This fish really gave me the run around with at least three long runs that took a good 15 yards off the reel. When it finally surfaced it was apparent why...it was a monster!
After sanding some anti-foul off the boat with it's head in a mental fit I finally managed to tail it and hoist her aboard. It's got to be one of the biggest hounds I've ever had..... unfortunately I'd left my scales at home but it had to be well over 15lb.
Not a lot else happened after that so we went to look for a few bass with lures. Again, bloody hard work today but we eventually found a couple each drifting over some rock in relatively shallow water before calling it a day.
Inshore fishing in summer is always going to be slower in the day time with a small tide but sometimes you just have to give it a try. Another 3 to 4 weeks and you might just find a cod!
