A Go At Light Rock Fishing - LRF

Light rock fishing or 'LRF' as it's more commonly known is growing in popularity week by week and so naturally we wanted to see what all the fuss was about.
Basically it involves very light rods rated between 5 to 20g, light lines/braids, 2500 and smaller size fixed spools, imitation worms and mini soft plastics (without going into too much detail!).
You could spend a fortune on this specialised gear but if you look around you can get set up pretty cheaply - check out the Tronix Pro rock fish rods and the 2500FB Shimano Catana for example - quality bits of kit for a fantastic price.
We shot out late evening and set up a very close in drift, less than a 100 yards from the shore in around 20 ft of water in amongst the kelp and rock. Dale and I started off with a large red Isome worm - his rigged on a drop-shot and mine on a 20g jig head. Dave was a bit twitchy and opted for a real ragworm over the imitations!!
What happened next defied belief - after a few jigs along the bottom Dale got smashed by the first decent wrasse that put up a hell of a fight!

A few photos and a new isome and back down he went......only to get completely smashed up by an even bigger fish!!
Minutes later there was interest in the jighead set up and we all laughed in disbelief as a tub gurnard came to the surface!!!

While all this was kicking off, Dave hadn't had so much as a sniff on an actual real worm bait and after both Dale and I had more bites developing he got twitchy again and changed to an artificial!
Another couple of good fish were dropped before we set our selves up for another drift on a slightly different patch of ground. I changed to a drop-shot rig and within seconds I had another bite developing. Connecting with the fish, I assumed it was a small wrasse - but no another surprise....the laughing got louder when a plaice came to the surface!!

Realising we must be on clean ground we shot back to where we had the first drift and soon the wrasse were slamming into the jigged baits again. Dale lost another couple of monsters before I got hit by a smaller fish with lovely markings:

The only pack of Isomes we had were fast running out and with the light fading I switched to the jig head and hooked on a tiny latex minnow.......it didn't take long for this one to get smashed either. The fight on this ultra light gear was amazing - I could draw comparison to fighting a small tuna!!

We were beginning to loose the light and with it the attention of the wrasse so we shot back in not long after. Conclusion is - definitely worth a go and may even out fish worms for the plaice - something that we are going to have to experiment with from time to time................oh it's a great laugh too!
