First Go At The Cod

First go at the cod this season and with the water temp still up we knew it would be hard. Reports of the odd fish showing here and there (mainly well out off shore) was enough to get us out there with a bit of hope.
We had planned to put a few miles between us and dry land this evening but the weather had taken a change for the worse and with lumpy sea conditions we couldn't get out to where we wanted to go. We pushed out around 3 miles for the flood and were on the limit of feeling comfortable but had to make do with the compromise.
Dogs, a few strap eels and pout were all that really made an appearance and as slack tide approached we made the call to head right inshore and fish a mark that throws them up later in the year......what did we have to lose, its always worth experimenting.
Eels were on the ground here too and after a couple of these each, Dave was pulling in another that suddenly turned into a 15lb cod at the surface....in disbelief I grabbed for the net and the first one was soon aboard!

Renewed enthusiasm came over us both and fresh baits were straight out to see if we could get another before it was time to head back in.
A nice bite started to develop on my uptide rod and after winding frantically I caught up with the weight of a decent fish. This one did indeed feel like a cod all the way to the boat but there was that shade of doubt in the back of mind that you get when you aren't 100%. Unfortunately my gut was right and an eel around 20lb came to the side of the boat....I hate eels when there are cod around!
While I was T-barring the bloody thing off at the side of the boat Dave was bent into another fish and by the way he was playing it (very gently) we both knew this would be the second one of the night! A smaller one around 8lb but another welcome cod all the same!

We pushed the session out for another half hour longer than originally planned but the bites had dried up and it was definitely time to head back. A couple of fish nailed and the rest of the cod season to go!......I just hope the weather plays ball and we get the chance to get a good few trips in.
