Well more wind showing this morning than we would have liked but the forecast was improving throughout the day so we decided to go for it, head out and have a go at the bass on the offshore banks.
Today's fishing would all be on the drift with a mix of lures and live baits. To get the best sport out of the fish today we were also going to be fishing ultra light gear with the old faithful medium light tronix pro rockfish rods....just as we have for the bream and plaice.
To start conditions were on the edge of comfortable but they were improving every minute. After sussing out the bank and queueing up for the first drift through we were pleasantly surprised when I hooked a fish on the first drop...
Second drift through produced a blank, as did the third and that coincided with the last of the flood tide dying away. While we waited for the ebb tide to pick up we thought we'd anchor up over slack and see what we could find on the bottom with squid baits.
Fish came quickly with a mix of Blondes, Thornbacks, Tope and the odd Pout.
It wasn't long before the ebb tide started to trickle through and that was our Que to up anchor and get back on the Bass. They were patchy but they were there and gradually we pulled them to the boat feeling every last kick of the tail on those super light rods. The weather got better, the sun came out and the day turned into a cracker!
The real highlight of the day though came in the shape of a double figure specimen that certainly gave Dave a run for his money on the light rod. He's been after one of these for a long time now....well his whole life in fact and the pressure was on me to make sure it went in the net! On deck she looked a double and with the scales confirming a weight of 10lb 1oz there was certainly a bit of whooping and hollering going on!....well done mate!
It was one of those days where the time flew by and before we knew it the time was against us. We'd had a ball on the bass with over a dozen fish between us and as much as we didn't want to leave, as ever - family commitments dictate you do so....if you want to go again that is!
